Station Volunteer Paul Smith
Paul began his “career” at Carlsbad PD in March of 2005 volunteering for the Senior Volunteer Patrol. After working with them for two years, he decided that it just wasn’t enough for him, so in addition to SVP, he applied to be a volunteer on the front desk, which he has been doing since June of 2007. Paul gives at least 5 hours a week to this endeavor and has put in 1,332 hours total on the front desk.
Paul signs off citations, releases impounded vehicles, answers phones, assists with walk-ins and helps however needed. He comes in with a smile and a “can do” attitude, always cheerful and a joy to work with. He is good-natured and understanding with our customers and will go out of his way to help.
Paul recently received praise from a citizen following his discovery of a suicide subject in a vehicle while on volunteer patrol:
“We wanted to let you know that Mr. Paul Smith of your Volunteer Police Group did a wonderful job on Saturday morning. From our kitchen window, Mother and I noticed that he and his partner had stopped their car and were peering into a car parked by the ravine. Interacting with many of us, handling the traffic, and talking to at least one person and her dog coming off of the trail in a most gracious and professional manner. Most importantly, he was most sensitive to the situation.”
Paul is a retired teacher and lives in Carlsbad with his wife, Tina. He enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and chatting about history.
Because of his dedication and loyalty, Paul has been chosen as the 2012 Station Volunteer of the Year.
