La Costa Avenue Interim Striping Plan

The Carlsbad City Council approved an interim striping plan for La Costa Avenue to improve traffic safety on June 28, 2011.

The main goal of the plan is to improve driver visibility from the residential driveways located between El Camino Real and Rancho Santa Fe Road. The proposed plan reduces La Costa Avenue to one lane westbound from Romeria Street through Fairway Lane by converting one of the vehicle lanes into a bike lane. The resulting lane configuration will match the existing lane striping on La Costa Avenue east of Romeria Street where this lane reduction has already been implemented.

The City Council considered alternatives to the interim striping plan including, but not limited to painted medians to restrict left turn movements, on-street parking restrictions, and lane reductions in the eastbound direction of travel. The Traffic Safety Commission recommended the City Council approve the proposed interim striping plan in addition to prohibiting on-street parking at select locations to improve driver visibility.

The striping plan is considered a short term solution to improving safety on La Costa Avenue. The city is also working with community members on a long term solution that addresses vehicles speed in a way that respects the residential character and arterial function of the roadway. The final workshop to develop this long term solution took place June 23. Staff is scheduled to present the community’s preferred plan to the Traffic Safety Commission on September 12, before taking the item to the City Council later this Fall.
